Street Hassle identifies the used car as both an object of social exchange and an instance of disposable architecture. Using tacit and haptic elements of automotive design (as well as physical and videotaped documentation of automotive abuse) Street Hassle creates a perfected wrecking yard; an impound lot of imposed aspirations and misaligned ideals. Sugarmann’s video, sculpture and fiber works subsume instances of romanticized car wrecks, confederate smog, and inappropriate nostalgia. Street Hassle is the recognition of a personalized apocalypse, a reenactment of an automotive disaster that is naggingly reassuring in its distant familiarity.
