Kristy Edmunds • RACC InSitu (3)

Edmunds, Kristy. Perusal. Ice, miscellaneous objects and performance. 1993. Portland, Oregon: Regional Arts & Culture Council.

“Perusal” is an interdisciplinary performance/installation based on the tension between gentrification and displacement within urban projects, in addition to serving as a “portrait” of the diverse individuals who frequent the North Park Blocks as a public/business space — both in the past and present. The installation consisted of over 500 blocks of ice with various objects frozen inside many of them, including items such as bags of gourmet coffee, spare change, condoms, lottery tickets, and pieces of clothing. Arranged into a series of passageways, the installation functioned as a setting for a performance. Spectators were invited to “peruse” the installation and collect any objects of interest to them. At the closing of the performance, the observers became active participants and rapidly destroyed the ice blocks to claim objects they desired.
