David Joyce: Escaping Man, May 5-June 24, 1994. Installation view. Portland, Oregon: Regional Arts & Culture Council, 1994.
Artist David Joyce believes that an effective installation should completely transform the exhibition space and create a visual event with enough impact that it can compete favorably with all the other activities taking place nearby. For people walking by Escaping Man in a hurry, Joyce sought to create a piece that communicated with power and clarity in a very short period of time, yet would still invite closer scrutiny and encourage the viewer to return at a later time for a second look.
“The man is either a coward or a hero, it depends on your point of view. Likewise, the woman is weak or strong. She too has known the weight of flight.”
