Rauschenberg, Robert. Lotus I from The Lotus Series. 2008. Digital print with photogravure, 45.75 x 60.75 inches. Exhibited in Robert Rauschenberg: The Lotus Series, July 3-2008-August 3, 2008. Portland, Oregon: Blue Sky Gallery.
Rauschenberg travelled to China in 1982 and made hundreds of photographs (fifty-two of which were collaged into the 100-foot-long photograph Chinese Summerhall). He returned to China in 1985 and made photographs as part of the Rauschenberg Overseas Cultural Interchange. Many of these images from Rauschenberg’s trips to China remained unused until this year, when Rauschenberg put them to work in this series of 12 prints made with longtime collaborator Bill Goldston of Universal Limited Art Editions. Rauschenberg died on May 12th at age 82 with a painting in progress in his studio, these prints rolling off the presses, and an undiminished and unequalled curiosity and love of life.
