I know nothing… • PNCA (3)

I know nothing of the weather when I know it is either raining or not raining, 2009. Portland, Oregon: Feldman Gallery at Pacific Northwest College of Art, 2009.

The seven artists in this exhibition activate strategies that willingly defy the necessary usefulness of logic and language. Human-constructed logical systems of language can only approximate, and therefore fail to express the totality and wholeness of the world that Wittgenstein’s cites. The artists in the exhibition create nuanced works through gestures that are at turns elegant or absurd, and in so doing affirm poetic and political possibilities of stretching or even misusing the structures of language. They embrace that which employs but stands outside of logic. Using simple operations akin to tautology and contradiction, the works confirm that language is not a perfect mirror for the world. I know nothing of the weather… emphasizes the underlying diversity of meaning and the range of interpretations that visible world allows for.
