Cydney Wilkes: PENTA – Five Elements, Five Seasons (WOOD, FIRE, EARTH, METAL, and WATER), May 5, 2004-February 6, 2005. Performance view. Portland, Oregon: Regional Arts & Culture Council, 2005.

“PENTA – Five Elements, Five Seasons” was a year-long performance piece that took place in the Tom McCall Waterfront Park from May 2004-February 2005. Each in this series of five ground and aerial duets, was based on the Five-Element Theory, a system of relationships used in Chinese medicine and astrology, and explored the relationships between the Five-Elements and the outdoor riverside environment of Portland. The Theory pairs season with elements, and elements with cycles. Each pairing is unique, but contains portions of the others. Each of the elements has characteristics such as color, sound, emotion, and universal concepts.
